Trade-Approved Weighbridges for Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and Australia-Wide

Hunter Weighing supplies, installs, calibrates and services weighbridges from our Teralba workshop near Newcastle — from short rigid-truck pads to long multi-deck road-train bridges, in capacities from 40 tonnes up to 200 tonnes.

What a weighbridge does for your site

A weighbridge (also called a truck scale) is a large platform scale that weighs a vehicle and its load. Most sites use it for one of two things: proving what was bought or sold by weight, or controlling what leaves the gate — so trucks aren't overloaded and dispatch records match what was actually carted. Our truck weight compliance guide explains the mass limits and Chain of Responsibility duties involved.

If the weight ticket is used to charge or pay for product — coal, aggregate, grain, scrap, waste — the weighbridge must be trade-approved and verified. If it's only used internally, a non-trade bridge can be enough. Getting that decision right at the start determines the indicator, the verification paperwork and the ongoing service you'll need.

    Above-ground (surface-mounted) weighbridges

An above-ground weighbridge sits on a prepared concrete base with a ramp at each end. It is usually the quickest permanent option to install because there's no pit to excavate, and technicians can reach the load cells from the side for inspection and cleaning.

    • Needs room for ramps at both ends, so the overall footprint is longer than the deck.
    • Water and spilled material drain away naturally instead of collecting under the deck.
    • Easier to relocate later — see our 33 m multi-deck weighbridge relocation, moved and recommissioned over one weekend.

    Pit-mounted weighbridges

A pit-mounted weighbridge sits in a concrete pit so the deck is level with the surrounding ground. Trucks drive straight on and off, which suits tight yards, drive-through traffic and sites without space for ramps.

    • Higher civil cost: the pit has to be designed, excavated, formed and poured.
    • The pit needs drainage and periodic cleaning so water and fines don't affect weighing.
    • Harder to move once built, so the location decision matters more.

    Steel deck or concrete deck?

We supply both steel-deck and concrete-deck weighbridges. Steel decks are lighter, arrive ready to install and are simpler to relocate. Concrete decks are heavier and are commonly chosen for high-traffic sites. The right choice depends on your traffic, ground conditions, budget and whether the bridge may need to move.

    Capacities and deck lengths

Choose capacity with headroom above your heaviest expected gross vehicle mass, and a deck long enough for the longest combination you weigh in one pass.

    CapacityTypical vehicles & deckTypical sites
40 – 60 tRigid trucks, small tippers, 6–10 m deckWaste depots, small quarries, farm gates
    60 – 80 tSemi-trailers, 12–18 m deckRegional logistics, grain receival, recycling
    80 – 100 tB-doubles, 18–24 m deckGeneral freight, civil works, aggregate
    100 – 150 tRoad trains, multi-section 24–30 mMining haul, bulk minerals, agriculture
    150 – 200 tOff-highway haul trucks, custom decksOpen-cut mines, coal handling, ports

*Capacity is specified per project. Tell us the vehicles you run and we'll recommend the capacity and deck configuration. If your loads don't arrive on a truck, compare options in our heavy-duty industrial scales guide.

    NMI trade approval and verification

In Australia, a weighbridge used for trade must be of a pattern approved by the National Measurement Institute (NMI) and verified before it's used for trade. Verification confirms the installed bridge weighs within its legal limits, using test weights traceable to national standards. After any repair or adjustment that could affect accuracy, it must be re-verified before trading again.

Our technicians commission every new weighbridge with certified test weights. Read how often a weighbridge should be calibrated for scheduling and maintenance advice.

    Installation, calibration and 24/7 service

    • Site assessment and recommendation: above-ground or pit, steel or concrete, capacity and deck length.
    • Supply and installation, including indicator, remote display and traffic lights where needed.
    • Commissioning and calibration with certified test weights.
    • Scheduled calibration, preventive maintenance and 24/7 breakdown support.
    • Load cell replacement and diagnostics for existing weighbridges — see load cells.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

Allow for the deck length plus straight, level approaches at each end so vehicles are fully on the deck and square to it. Above-ground bridges also need room for ramps. We confirm the layout at a site assessment.

No. Above-ground weighbridges need no pit and are usually faster and cheaper to install. A pit suits tight yards or drive-through traffic where ramps won't fit. See the cost guide for the trade-offs.

Yes, if the weight ticket is used to buy or sell by weight. The weighbridge must be an NMI-approved pattern and be verified before trade use. For internal stock control only, a non-trade bridge can be enough.

It depends on traffic, conditions and trade use. Many operators book calibration every 6 to 12 months, and a trade weighbridge must be re-verified after repairs or adjustments. See our calibration guide.

It depends on the type and civil works. Above-ground bridges are generally quicker than pit-mounted ones, which need the pit built and cured first. We give a project-specific programme with your quote.

Steel decks are lighter, faster to install and easier to relocate. Concrete decks are heavier and suit high-traffic sites. We recommend one based on your traffic, ground and budget.

Yes. We relocated a 33 m multi-deck weighbridge over a single weekend closure — read the relocation case study.

Yes. We calibrate, maintain and repair existing weighbridges, including load cell replacement and indicator upgrades.
